Matt Graham, Congregational Life Pastor

What do you love most about your job?  In serving as a pastor, I thoroughly enjoy the nature of working in and for the church.  More specifically, I have found great joy in watching as theological ideas work themselves out in daily life.  Therefore, to study what it means when we say something like, "God is faithful to his covenant people" is one thing.  However, to have front row viewing as the implications of that statement are worked out within the lives of those in our church becomes a great privilege.

What do you do?   Some of the duties that fall to me are leading congregational prayer as well as being the staff contact for all adult ministries in the church.

A little bit about your background?  I came to Upland as a Taylor student in 1999.  I left with a B.S. in Social Studies Education and a wife-to-be.  Polly and I were married the summer of 2003 as we both started our teaching careers that fall.  I taught high school social studies classes for 6 years before resigning my position in order to complete my MA in Theological Studies from Asbury Theological Seminary (spring 2011).

We have two children: Clara, age 5 and Carter, age 3.  Second only to my wife are my children as instruments for my personal sanctification!  It is fascinating how the kids have functioned both as my pupils and my teachers.  Somehow, I think that is headed in the right direction.

Presently we live on campus at Indiana Wesleyan University where Polly is a resident director.  There we have been juggling our various responsibilities, raising the kids, learning a ton, and enjoying the blessings of the Lord.  We really never envisioned this path, but we feel secure in it as we are certain God is leading the way.

What are some of your personal favorites?

  • Books?  I will read nearly anything on theology or philosophy.
  • Movies?  Anything that gets the mind going and has a rich plot line.  Inception, for example, was a fun show to try and keep up with.
  • Things to do?  Spend time with family and friends, read, watch sports (NFL, NCAA basketball, NBA), play sports (esp. basketball), keep up on national and world news, more and more I enjoy hiking, NPR Radio, yard games, Settlers of Catan (and the like), bike rides, slowly learning gardening.
